Crushing Idols

One thing I love doing is reading. Sometimes I think I don’t read enough. Recently I was reading Tullian Tchividjian’s book Jesus + Nothing = Everything. While reading last week I came across this and wanted to share it.

“The gospel is intended to wrestle us to the ground and to crush our idols, and we all, by nature, resist that in certain ways.”

Over the last few months I’ve been exploring what the gospel is. And the more I examine it the more I realize that I haven’t truly understood what it is. When I read that quote it spoke to me in a different way. It made me realize that the gospel isn’t about what I can do, it’s not about me living perfectly, it’s about Jesus breaking me down, so that I can become more and more like him.

Like the quote says there are many ways that I have personally resisted Jesus destroying my idols. And back in biblical times this was the case as well. Jesus, in a majority of his parables, was attempting  to crush people’s idols. No matter if it was about money or pride, Jesus was telling people that was they were putting their value in wasn’t going to last. A majority of the people that he shared this with went with their nature like most of us do and resisted him.

What are ways that you personally resist Jesus crushing your idols?
